Erev Passover

The day before Passover

Erev Passover: Section 1

Search for the Chametz.

Make the final preparations for Passover by searching for leaven bread throughout the house after evening services on the thirteenth of Nissan.

Light a candle before the ceremony of searching for leaven begins.

Recite.

Praised be You, Eternal our God, ruler of the world, who made us holy with the commandments, and commanded us to remove the leaven.

Erev Passover: Section 2

Eruv Tavshilin.

Search for leaven in silence.

Wrap the found leaven in paper.

Recite.

Any kind of leaven that may still be in the house, which I have not seen or have not removed shall be as if it does not exist, and as the dust of the Earth.

On the morning of the fourteenth of Nissan, burn all of the collected leaven from the house.

Recite.

Any kind of leaven that may still be in the house, which I have or have not seen, which I have or have not removed, shall be as if it does not exist, and as the dust of the Earth.

Erev Passover: Section 3

When the holiday starts on Wednesday or Thursday night, a member of the household must make an ‘Eruv Tavshilin’ in order to be able to prepare foods on Friday for Shabbat.

On the afternoon before the holiday, take a piece of matzah and a piece of fish or meat, put it on a plate.

Raise the plate.

Recite.

Praised be You, Eternal our God, Ruler of the Universe, who made us holy with the commandments, and commanded us to observe the Eruv.

With this Eruv it shall be permitted for us to bake, cook, and to keep the food warm, to kindle lights, and to prepare all necessary things on the festival for the Sabbath. This shall be permitted to us and to all the Jews who live in this city.
